An Exhibition Experiment Museum? What for?

Don’t panic – I’m Islamic!” is the label on T-Shirts, worn by young German Muslims, addressing the stereotypes and anxiety they often encounter when they are seen as representatives of Islamic Terrorism. A Research and Exhibition Project, conducted by Susan Kamel and Christine Gerbich from the Technical University of Berlin questioned the representation of Muslim cultures in a very important site for self assurance – which is the museum. But the two scholars – in times of anti-muslim prejudices didn’t halt here – they were also involved in setting up new exhibitions or other form of educational material. Thereby they wanted to initiate thought-provoking and challenging encounters with „Islam“ and „Muslim cultures“.
